I🌿 Hospitality with Heart: Learning True Generosity in Honduras

At The Gathering Table, hospitality isn’t just a business value — it’s a calling. Our dream has always been to create a faith-based event space where guests feel loved, seen, and cared for. But that vision didn’t start here in our barn or greenhouse. It began years ago, on a dusty mountain road in Honduras.

The Moment That Changed My View of Hospitality

After college, I worked with a campus ministry that regularly took mission trips to Honduras. We went with the best intentions — to serve, to help, and to make a difference. One evening, a few of us were invited into the home of a family who lived in the small mountain village where we were helping build a road.

We didn’t know what to expect. Their home was simple, and resources were scarce. But as we stepped inside, they smiled, invited us to sit, and began serving us dinner — fish and Coke. What we didn’t realize at first was that they were giving us their own meal, the only food they had that night.

I’ll never forget how humbling that was. I had traveled there believing I was the one bringing help and hope — but in that moment, I realized I was the one being served. Their selfless hospitality and generosity became one of the greatest lessons of my life.

What True Hospitality Means

That evening in Honduras completely changed how I understand the heart of Christian hospitality. It’s not about what we have to offer; it’s about the heart with which we offer it. True hospitality is rooted in love, humility, and generosity — the kind that gives without expecting anything in return.

Romans 12:13 says, “Practice hospitality.” It’s not just a suggestion; it’s a way of living out our faith through service. That family didn’t have much, but what they gave was priceless — their warmth, their welcome, and their willingness to share what little they had.

Bringing That Spirit Home to The Gathering Table

While The Gathering Table is a business, it’s also a ministry in our hearts. Our mission is to reflect that same spirit of open-handed generosity — to make every guest feel like family. Whether it’s a wedding, a baby shower, or a photo session, we want our space to feel like a place of peace, joy, and genuine connection.

There are moments when I still find myself holding back — thinking about costs, time, or convenience. But I always come back to that evening in Honduras. The memory reminds me that true hospitality is about giving, even when it costs us something. It’s about serving with love, not just providing a service.

Why Hospitality Still Matters

In today’s fast-paced, transactional world, slowing down to welcome someone — to truly see and serve them — is powerful. At The Gathering Table, our hope is that every event becomes more than a booking. We pray that every guest leaves feeling restored, refreshed, and loved.

We may not serve fish and Coke like that Honduran family did, but we try to serve every visitor with the same heart — one that says, “You are welcome here.”
